So you think you know how to play Pokemon? Do you say to yourself:
"OMG, Pokemon is so easy?" If that is true, then man, are you are in
for a shock.
There is a hidden depth to Pokemon that the games don't so much as
hint at. I'm talking about the Metagame. The following quote
is from Wikipedia:
Metagaming is a broad term usually used to define any strategy,
action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed
ruleset, uses external factors to affect the game, or goes beyond
the supposed limits or environment set by the game.
So basically, Metagaming is using knowledge not found in the game
to your advantage. Such as manipulating your Pokemon's EVs to suit
your needs in battle.
You might be saying, That sounds a lot like cheating! but I
assure you that it is not. Stuff like EVs and IVs are already in the
game and are working away even though you may not be aware of them. I assume
they were put in to keep battles interesting. Instead of a KO being
a sure thing, there are other factors that make it less simple, although
the casual player may never be aware of it.
Of course, Pokemon is still JUST A GAME and some times people forget
that. You can completely ignore the metagame and still enjoy playing.
It just depends on the type of person you are.
